Payware Square made headlines – and dollars – when it brought bitcoin trading back to its mobile platform during the bull market for cryptocurrencies in the winter of 2017.
Now rival payment company Venmo, owned by PayPal, is following suit with the launch of cryptocurrency exchanges in four major currencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Litzein (LTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH).
From 20. By April, more than 70 million Venmo customers will be able to buy, store and sell cryptocurrencies directly in the Venmo app. The launch gives users access to in-app guides to help them better navigate cryptocurrency trading, and also encourages them to share their cryptocurrency experiences through the Venmo feed.
Venmo users will be able to buy cryptocurrencies starting at $1 and use funds from their Venmo balance, a linked bank account or debit card to buy and sell their holdings.
More than 30 percent of Venmo’s customers have already started buying cryptocurrencies or stocks, according to the company’s 2020 survey, and 20 percent of them started buying during the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting that public health and the accompanying economic crisis have accelerated the trend toward digitization and experimentation with new financial technologies.
Venmo’s support for cryptocurrencies is made possible through a partnership with Paxos Trust Company, a regulated provider of cryptocurrencies such as Stablecoin, and other services. The owner of Venmo PayPal also has a conditional bitl license issued by the sophisticated New York State Department of Financial Services. Conditional licensees, such as PayPal, must work with companies that have already obtained full licenses – as in this case, Paxos.
Less than a week ago, PayPal CEO Dan Schulman hinted that things had changed since the payments giant launched its cryptocurrency offering in the United States last November. Schulman said PayPal wants to support the use of cryptocurrencies for everyday transactions, as well as the use of smart contracts and other broader features of blockchain technology. He also outlined the company’s vision to use cryptocurrencies to create an inclusive economy where things are done very differently than they are now.
